Our Foundation

Built through experience across food systems

Tropical AgriFoods is a Ghana-based food and agri-food company rooted in Northern Ghana and operating across the wider savannah and Sahel region of West Africa.

Our story has been shaped by long engagement with agricultural systems, farmers, institutions and markets, and by the belief that lasting food security depends on how well food systems work for both families and producers.

Our Journey

Milestones of Growth & Evolution

Tracing our development from local commodity aggregation to an integrated value chain.

2017 — Our Beginnings

Savannah & Sahel Commodities

Tropical AgriFoods Ltd began operations in 2017 as Savannah & Sahel Commodities Ltd (SSCL).

At that time, the company focused on agricultural aggregation from smallholder farmers across Northern Ghana and parts of Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Côte d'Ivoire. With headquarters in Tamale and bilingual teams working in English and French, SSCL operated at the intersection of farmers, traders and institutional buyers.

Through this work, we encountered recurring challenges: limited institutional sourcing, market access constraints for farmers, price volatility, inconsistent quality and missed opportunities for value addition at origin.

The Turning Point

Learning from the Field

As our work deepened, it became clear that raw agricultural trade alone could not address broader food system challenges.

We observed persistent malnutrition, particularly in Northern Ghana, alongside unmet opportunity for affordable, locally produced food solutions. At the same time, farmers faced rising input costs and declining soil productivity, while institutions struggled to source consistent products that met defined requirements.

These realities shaped a decision to evolve beyond aggregation.

Transition

An Evolution in Scope

The transition from SSCL to Tropical AgriFoods represents an evolution, not a break.

Our focus expanded from commodity trading to nutrition-sensitive food products, value-added processing and structured supply models designed to serve households, institutions and regional markets more effectively.

This evolution reflects a simple principle: feeding families sustainably also requires empowering farmers through fair participation, local value addition and predictable demand.

Present Day

How We Work Today

Today, Tropical AgriFoods operates across food and agricultural value chains, integrating indigenous production knowledge, regenerative agroforestry practices and modern food science.

We see regenerative agroforestry as a practical production system rooted in savannah parkland traditions — one that supports farm productivity, reduces input costs, restores soil health and strengthens long-term supply resilience.

Through collaboration with research and public institutions, we translate these systems into food solutions that are affordable, safe and suited to everyday use.

Our Perspective

Nutrition that respects everyday realities

We believe nutrition solutions must be affordable, practical and respectful of how families prepare and consume food.

We are cautious of one-size-fits-all approaches and imported narratives that overlook local contexts. Instead, we focus on context-appropriate fortification, responsible innovation and clarity over claims, working within recognised standards to build trust with households and institutions.

Leadership & Stewardship

Guiding with responsibility

Tropical AgriFoods Ltd is led by its founders, Mr. Senyo Kpelly and Mr. Anane Sotowu, who serve as stewards of the organisation's long-term direction and values. Together with the wider team, they guide the company's growth with a focus on responsible sourcing, food system resilience and shared value creation.

"Our commitment remains consistent: to supply nutritious food reliably, strengthen local sourcing and contribute to food systems that support both families and farmers across the region."
